House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told fellow Democrats that she will seek an independent investigation commission to look further into the Jan. 6 Capitol Hill breach.
The announcement comes as bipartisan Congressional support for the probe comes after former President Trump was acquitted for his alleged role in initiating the uprising.
Perhaps the third time will be a charm as the independent investigation panel will resemble the 9/11 and Warren commissions.
The announcement came after a preliminary report from retired Lt. Gen. Russel Honoré suggested a broader probe was needed in order to spare the Capitol from another breach.
“It is clear from his findings and from the impeachment trial that we must get to the truth of how this happened,” Pelosi told Democratic colleagues.
“To protect our security, our security, our security, our next step will be to establish an outside, independent 9/11-type Commission,” the Speaker said.
The probe should look into why in the days before the breach the sergeant at arms for both houses of Congress did not request additional security as intelligence reports suggested at the time.
It also needs to be discovered who planted two pipe bombs the night before on the Capitol Hill complex and who was leading the effort to get into the Capitol Building before Trump even took the stage for his speech that fateful day.
Please excuse my cynicism, but we’ll check back in two years and $40 million later to discover it was all Trump’s fault just in time to rake him and Republicans over the coals before the midterm elections.
