Albany lawmakers nearly separated their shoulders while slapping themselves on the back Thursday after passing a number of measures —in the last minutes of the legislation session — to further curtail the 2nd Amendment rights of lawful New Yorkers.
Unfortunately none of the new bills that will be signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul in the coming days will do anything for the super majority of illegal gun shootings here in the city.
While these measures make it harder for law-abiding citizens to obtain firearms and other related materials, it does not strengthen the existing laws on the use of an illegal weapon during a crime.
The package includes 10 bills that impose age restrictions on the sale of semi-automatic rifles, ban most civilians from buying bulletproof vests, close a high-capacity magazine loophole and strengthen existing “red flag” laws among other measures.
“We cannot be satisfied by New York’s already tough gun laws,” Hochul said in a statement Thursday without noting the obvious that illegal guns were not addressed. “Shooting after shooting makes it clear that they must be even stronger to keep New Yorkers safe.”
Hochul must believe that New Yorkers are so gullible that she can site 95% of the shootings that will not be addressed by these new proposed laws.
One of the bills included in the package requires New Yorkers to be 21 years old to purchase a semi-automatic rifle. The measure was pushed by Hochul after an 18-year-old white supremacist used a legally-purchased assault weapon allegedly to kill 10 black people in the governor’s hometown of Buffalo.
New Yorkers would also need a license to buy or come into possession of semi-automatic rifles under the proposal, similar to current state requirements to have a handgun.
Another proposal prohibits the sale of bulletproof vests to people outside of certain professions like law enforcement.
All in all no city resident should feel safer on the streets after Hochul signs these bills into law, because it will do nothing for the everyday shootings we see in the 5 boros.
