In a surreal press conference on Wednesday US military leaders revealed that they will not be able to save all Americans trying to leave Afghanistan if they cannot get to the US-controlled airport in Kabul.
In the press briefing, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley said the military has the capability to extract some Americans in extreme circumstances, but not to gather up large groups of Americans who cannot get to the airport in Kabul after the Taliban seized near-total control of the country over the weekend.
In an unbelievable admission Milley said, “The State Department is working with the Taliban to facilitate safe passage of American citizens – U.S. Passport holders.”
“We’re going to do everything we can to continue to try to deconflict and create passageways for them to get to the airfield,” Austin said. “I don’t have the capability to go out and extend operations currently into Kabul.
“The forces that we have are focused on security at the airfield. I don’t want to detract from that. I don’t want to do anything to make the airfield less safe,” Austin added.
Just to summarize, the strongest military force in the world is relying on the kindness of the invading hordes of Taliban fighters to allow American citizens through their checkpoints around Kabul to get to safety.
And yet I do not see any mainstream media covering this incredulous admission.
As an aside, Vice President Kamala Harris is off visiting Vietnam at the same time the US Embassy in Kabul looks very much like the last days of the embassy in Saigon. You really can’t make this up, even if you tried.
