In what is being called a leaked document the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) will later this spring overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark decision that provides women with a constitutionally protected right to an abortion.

While many legal scholars have debated the merits of the 1973 ruling as specious, due to the fact that abortion became a constitutional right under highly questionable 4th Amendment privacy rights.

If the document is true, which a SCOTUS spokesperson had “no comment”, it would return the abortion question back to the states to adjudicate.

The majority opinion was written by Justice Samuel Alito, who allegedly wrote, “Roe was egregiously wrong from the start,” in the 98-page draft opinion.

“It is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people’s elected representatives,” the opinion stated.

The high court’s discussions on the matter have four of the other conservative justices – Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett — joining Alito in his vote after the judges convened following oral arguments in December.

After the news about the draft opinion broke, barricades were placed around the Supreme Court building in Washington DC in anticipation of an insurrection.

Locally to no one’s surprise Democratic politicians came out in force to demonize the ruling.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said that he is ready to “fight like hell” against the Supreme Court’s ruling, he tweeted Monday night while he was in attendance at the Met Gala.

“New York City knows that a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions is hers and hers alone,” he wrote. “This potential assault on their freedom by right-wing extremists cannot stand. “We’re ready to fight like hell.”

Gov. Kathy Hochul said the state would “welcome with open arms” anyone who needs access to an abortion.

“New York will always be a place where abortion rights are protected and where abortion is safe and accessible,” she said.

No where in the either argument over the ruling is the baby’s life taken into consideration, which is odd to me. The right believes it should be up to the states to approve an abortion law and the left sees it as a natural-born right for a woman.

So while the overturning of Roe v. Wade may have religious people elated, it is for all the wrong reasons to their faith. The SCOTUS ruling does not ban abortion as morally corrupt, it merely says that individual states should vote on the subject.

Should this ruling stand as presented in the opinion it will only further divide the country. By some estimates 26 states will ban abortions if it is left to the states.

Each day battle lines are being drawn. When will this powder keg ignite? I see it as sooner rather than later.
