Football has a day to forget

Football took it on the chin on Monday as two scary events took place.

During the day, Deion Burks playing for Purdue in the Citrus Bowl had a horrible collision in a late fourth quarter play in a lopsided 63-7 game. He was taken to a local hospital after more than 15 minutes on the field trying to assess injury to his neck and spine.

Burks was later released from the hospital Monday night.

Then on the Monday Night Football game Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, 24, collapsed on the field after tackling Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins in the first quarter. Hamlin was administered CPR on the field and taken to the hospital in an ambulance. The game was suspended in wake of the injury.

Hamlin suffered from cardiac arrest and is in critical condition, the Bills announced Monday night.

These two events happening mere hours apart shows how much football is a very dangerous sport, which could go away at any moment. Besides concussions and the long term condition of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) brought on by multiple brain injuries, these two events on Monday show the other dangerous aspects of the sport.

My prayers go out to both young men today and I hope all is well with them both.
